JIANG QING AND THE CULTURAL REVOLUTION
As Lan Ping
One of the Eight Model Plays
Being led into court
Before marrying Chairman Mao, Jiang Qing was an actress in Shanghai. She appeared in the Peking Opera, triumphed as "Nora" in A Doll's House and acted in left-wing propaganda films.
In Yan'an, Jiang Qing met and married Mao Tse Tung, under the agreement that she would not go into politics for 20 years.
During the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), she developed the Eight Model Plays which were the only sources of artistic expression for 10 years.
After Chairman Mao's death, Jiang Qing and the Gang of Four were arrested. She remained in prison for 15 years and committed suicide in May 1991.
